As usual at a Niigata koi show, the weather has been awful. As I approached the show, the weather was changing, at I passed through Echigo Yuzawa, some 70km south of Niigata it as sunny, and dry. At Koide, the sun had gone and now clouds. By Ojiya it was clear the chance of rain was high. I pulled in the car park of the koi show with the windscreen wipers on!
The koi show shorter than the All Japan held in Tokyo in February, so the show opened in the afternoon, after judging. Many koi had not been returned to their ponds after judging, and a lot of vats were covered up. I think the total number of koi entered was around the 1600 mark, which is very impressive.
The All Japan Young Koi Show restricts size of entrants to 63cm, the smallest koi on display were less than 10cm. As with the All Japan show in Tokyo, all the major winners are moved to their own display pool. Luckily these were all present as the rain poured down.
The Sunday wasn't much better. When I opened my hotel room door, it was raining in the corridor. The service door was open and the wind and rain was horrendous. I had a drive up to the venue but decided with the weather, I wouldn't get around the outside vats.
At Japanese koi shows, the awards are all present before the show opens, so the 2019 All Japan Young Koi Show Grand Champion was already in it's display pool, a 63cm Kohaku from Sakai Fish Farm.
