The koi in our ponds will pollute the water in two ways. We must remove both these contaminants from the water in the filters, which contains filter media.
Solid waste can be removed in many ways. The old favourite method is to use brushes in the first chamber of a filter. This can be a chore.
A modern approach is to use static Kaldnes K1 as seen in the Nexus Eazy systems. However, Kaldnes K1 can 'escape' from DIY filter modifications. Evolution Aqua have now introduced Kaldnes K3 which is bigger and more suited to this application.
The toxic waste (liquid) that is excreted by koi is broken down by bacteria that lives on the filter media. The filter media used will determine how much bacteria will live in your filters, and will in turn determine how many koi can be safely stocked in your pond.
Modern plastic media has a very high surface area for biological filtration to take place. Japanese Matting and Kaldnes K1 are the most popular.
