Bottom Drains and Skimmers are found on most serious koi ponds. We believe that it is an absolute minimum that a koi pond should have a bottom drain at the lowest part of the pond.
This ensures that all the solid was produced by the koi reaches the filter, where it should be removed.
It is becoming more common to use Aerated Bottom Drains to provide aeration to the pond. They can also be 30% more efficient due to the column of rising air and extra water movement created.
Skimmers do the same job as a bottom drain, transport dirty water to the filters, only on the surface. They collect any debris that may be on the pond surface, including leafs, uneaten food etc and transport the water to some form of filter. This 'skimmer line' could include a Fluid Bed Fitler for increased biological filtration for example. |
