Oxygen is vital to the survival of nearly all life on Earth.
Koi require oxygen to survive, as do the tiny bacteria and micro organisms that make up a healthy filter.
One way of adding oxygen to the pond or tank is the use of Air Pumps and some way of getting the air into the pond. We usually use airstones, although many koi ponds now have aerated bottom drains.
As a rough guide, 20 litres per minute per 1000 gallons or 4500 litres is required for a koi pond, however 40 litres is a much better figure. The added benefit of high oxygen levels for the koi keeper is that the fish are often much more active. |
