Koi Pond Filter Media: Foam, Matting & Wool

Japanese matting was the media of choice, and still today serves a purpose. It is best used in cartridge form to allow plenty of water circulation and oxygen to reach the vital filter bacteria. It also prevents any clogging. Ideally water should be well filtered of solids before reaching Japanese matting. Used in a multi bay or vortex filter system, you will often find it in the last chamber after a media such as K1/K3.

Filter wool is a great polisher of water, due to the fine paths of water through the material. It can be placed in the skimmer basket, in the outlet of a filter, or under a spray bar on a trickle filter to remove fine particles. It will need swapping regularly due to the amount of waste collected.
