4mm airline is commonly used on smaller air stones, such as the 50mm ceramic balls, and the smaller ceramic cylinder air stones.
8mm is for use on aerated bottom drains, and larger flat ceramic air stones and larger Japanese ceramics such as the CE6 and CE7.
